ANDY PARKIN

one of the world's finest alpinists

Andy Parkin

Andy's phenomenal talent as an all-round climber, performing at the highest

standards on technical rock through to Himalayan mountaineering led to a

series of major ascents through the world including the first alpine style

solo of the Walker spur in winter and an alpine ascent of Broad Peak

(8047m) in the Karakorum, Pakistan.

First ascents of "Beyond Good and Evil", "Sans Nom - Sans Ame"

and "Pelerinage" in the Mont Blanc range, together with "Vuela de

la Noche" and "Los Tiempos Perdidos" in Patagonia typify Andy's

climbing strengths on the greatest difficulty of mixed climbs, many

of which he climbs solo - the ultimate challenge for any mountaineer.

In 1984 a serious accident in Switzerland nearly claimed Andy's life. It seemed unlikely he would ever climb again. However Andy's determination saw him fight

back to health and after a long rehabilitation he eventually began climbing again.

During his recovery Andy turned increasingly to his artistic interests and developed a considerable body of work of both painting and sculpture. So much so that he is now known as much for his inspirational artwork as for his legendary climbing exploits.

"Climbing and life are, I believe, not about conquering or dominating but adaptation...my life style has evolved from that of a climber to one of artist/climber. These two apparently dissimilar activities allow me to explore the mountain ranges of the world, looking for first ascents, adventure and images." - Andy Parkin.
