John Muir Trust Logo

The John Muir Trust is a wild land conservation charity founded in 1983. It was named after the Scots-born ecologist, mountaineer, writer and campaigner John Muir, who became famous as the main driving force behind the creation of national parks and protected wilderness areas in the United States.

The Trust also works hard to persuade governments and policy makers of the benefits of wild land and the value in protecting and restoring it. Its flagship education and engagement programme, the John Muir Award, operates across Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland, working with 1,200 partner organisations to deliver tens of thousands of Award certificates each year.

    Protecting Our Landscape

The Trust has owned and managed some of UK’s best loved wild landscapes since 1987 in order to protect and enhance them. It currently looks after:

    Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis

Glenridding Common, including the summit of Helvellyn

A substantial part of the Cuillin mountain range, Skye

A large mountain and coastal area on the remote Knoydart peninsula

Sandwood Bay and its surrounding hinterland, far North West coast of Scotland

Schiehallion, the famous mountain in Highland Perthshire where contour lines originated

Quinag, a complex three-peak mountain in Assynt, Sutherland

Equipped For Conservation

Mountain Equipment is a corporate member of the John Muir Trust supporting the charity in a number of ways. This includes equipping its land staff with clothing and equipment, a vital resource for those involved in year round conservation work in some of our wildest and most precious landscapes.

Trail Magazine Competition
  • Have you been inspired by the mountains?

Perhaps something amazing, exciting, harrowing, or particularly memorable happened; or maybe just being in a beautiful place gave you a new appreciation of your life. Whatever your experience, we want to celebrate these life-changing mountains with you.

Whether you are a mountain lover who’s never put pen to paper, or a blogger, a writer or a literary award winner we’d love to hear from you.

All you have to do is send Trail Magazine your 400-word account of the single most memorable day you have spent in the outdoors and every month the winning entry will be published in the magazine.

Each month, the winning entry will also win £100 worth of Mountain Equipment gear of their choice, as well as a year's membership for the John Muir Trust.

At the end of the year, one overall winner will be selected to spend a day on a John Muir Trust managed mountain with a member from the Mountain Equipment Pro-Team, who will create a tailored experience in one unforgettable British location. The overall winner will also get the opportunity to write a feature- length article for Trail magazine.
